Yosemite is more than its landmark

Paris has sa tour Eiffel, Berlin has the Brandenburger Tor and Yosemite National Park has the Half Dome. And just like in Paris and Berlin, there is more to see in Yosemite.

Honestly, my very first impression of Yosemite was one of disappointment. I was in for wild, untouched nature but there were crowds of people, souvenir shops and paved roads. The busiest pedestrian highways led to those points with a prime view of the Half Dome and it was there where all the crowds gathered for sunset – us included! The first picture in the gallery is the shot everyone wants to get. But there is more to explore, and today, I want to share a few impressions from the park. The last picture is somewhere near Cathedral Lake, my favorite part in that little area that we were able to explore.

Have you been to Yosemite? What was your favorite spot?

Time of visit: August 2010

It is a very beautiful place to visit! I guess the most important bit of advice is to reserve early if you want to stay inside the park – we went there quite spontaneously and only got a place in a few tents a near the highway. And be sure to bring enough time to explore beyond the main spots!

It was beautiful but so big that, even though we stayed for a few days, we didn’t get to see everything. We just missed seeing a grizzly bear several times, which was sad for the kids, but we didn’t take any tours (except for riding the stage coach — which I will justify by saying, we had kids with us). We stayed at the Old Faithful Inn, courtesy of my husband’s planning skills, and that was amazing. But we still spent a fair amount of time driving from site to site. (Fortunately, we had Frodo and his friends on audiotape to keep us entertained.)

I just made it to Yellowstone this summer for the first time, and I hear your about the crowds. I’ve never been to Yosemite so thanks for sharing your beautiful photos! (By the way, you’re not alone in trying to keep up with all the assignments! Yikes!!)
